Understanding TMJ

What is TMJ disorder?

Your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect your jaw to your skull, just in front of each ear. Together with the strong chewing muscles around them, they let you talk, chew and yawn.

When the joint or those muscles are strained, it's called TMJ disorder (TMD). It can cause pain, clicking, headaches and a tight or locked jaw. Most cases have more than one cause, so the best results usually come from treating the muscles, the habits and the joint together.

Common contributors

  • Clenching and grinding (bruxism), often at night or under stress
  • Muscle tension in the jaw, neck and shoulders
  • Posture, including forward-head posture at a desk or phone
  • Joint changes such as arthritis or disc displacement
  • Injury to the jaw, face or neck
Treatment options

Three ways we treat TMJ, often together

After your assessment, we'll recommend the mix that fits your symptoms. Many people get the best relief from combining treatments.

Your assessment and consultation are covered by Alberta Health. Botox injections for jaw clenching are private-pay, and we give you the cost before you decide.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly with Preceptus Health.
How does Botox help TMJ and jaw clenching?
Small doses of Botox relax the overworked chewing muscles, which reduces clenching, grinding, jaw tension and related headaches. You can still talk, chew and smile normally.
How long does Botox for TMJ last?
Most people notice a difference within one to two weeks, and results usually last about three to four months. Your provider will talk with you about timing for repeat treatments.
Does it hurt?
The injections use a very fine needle and take only a few minutes. Most people feel a brief pinch. Mild tenderness or a small bruise can happen and settles quickly.
Can I combine Botox, physiotherapy and medication?
Yes. Many people do best with a combination, and your plan is built around your symptoms and goals.
